SIDOARJO – The collapse of the mosque building at Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Buduran, Sidoarjo, East Java, on Monday afternoon left deep wounds for the boarding school community and local residents. The three-story mosque collapsed around 3:15 PM local time, while student activities were underway.
The caretaker, KHR Abdus Salam Mujib, urged all parties to accept this disaster with sincerity. He hoped this tragedy would become a test that Allah SWT would later replace with greater goodness.
“This is destiny from Allah. We all must be patient, God willing it will be replaced with something better,” said Kiai Abdus Salam, who also serves as the boarding school’s caretaker.
Following the incident, educational activities at the boarding school were temporarily suspended. The boarding school administration could not yet determine when normal operations would resume.
The mosque building was actually still under construction that had been ongoing for 10 months. According to plans, the first floor was to be used as a mosque for male students, while the second and third floors would function as halls for activities such as religious discussions and other student forums.
Before the disaster occurred, final concrete pouring was done on the third floor from morning until noon. Although the pouring process was completed, the building supports were suspected to be insufficiently strong to bear the load. Consequently, the structure couldn’t withstand the pressure and ultimately collapsed.
“It appears the concrete supports weren’t strong enough to bear the load, causing them to press downward and collapse,” explained Kiai Abdus Salam.
This mosque collapse disaster has triggered deep concern from students’ parents, alumni, and the wider community. Many prayers and sympathies have poured in, hoping the extended family of Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School will be granted patience and strength to face this heavy trial.
