The Vietnam Boxing Federation will hold an emergency meeting this afternoon, September 4, to immediately address the situation regarding chairman Luu Tu Bao, who has been out of contact for many months.

He is currently the chairman of the Vietnam Boxing Federation (VBF) for the second term (2023 – 2028), the chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Mixed Martial Arts Federation (HMMAF) for the first term (2022 – 2027), and the executive director of Saigon Sports Club (SSC) – one of the leading martial arts clubs in Ho Chi Minh City.

As reported, for many months, Mr. Bao has not been present in Vietnam after returning to the United States in February 2025. Many members of VBF and HMMAF, as well as local organizations across the country, have been unable to meet or contact their leader to carry out work.

The loss of contact with Mr. Luu Tu Bao and his absence from directly managing work at VBF and HMMAF has caused confusion within the Vietnamese boxing community.

On the morning of September 4, the VBF standing committee proposed that vice chairman and general secretary Nguyen Duy Hung organize an online meeting to officially announce and immediately address the situation regarding Mr. Luu Tu Bao.

Accordingly, the standing committee will hold an online meeting at 4:30 PM today (September 4) to discuss information related to chairman Luu Tu Bao.

Regarding Mr. Luu Tu Bao’s loss of contact for many months, Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung stated that on August 3, Mr. Luu Tu Bao called him directly from the United States to discuss work. “Bao called and said he was busy with matters in the U.S., so he asked me to manage VBF during this time. We also discussed other VBF work,” Mr. Hung shared.

Previously, a sports industry leader commented: “According to feedback from local organizations and the Vietnam Boxing Federation, they have lost contact with Mr. Bao for 4-5 months now.

Therefore, the Department of Sports is doing two things: Requesting relevant Vietnamese authorities (Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to verify information related to Mr. Luu Tu Bao; and directing the Vietnam Boxing Federation to meet, carry out work, and assign a temporary person in charge to avoid affecting general operations during Mr. Bao’s absence.”

Mr. Luu Tu Bao holds dual citizenship

It is known that Mr. Luu Tu Bao holds dual citizenship of Vietnam and the United States. Mr. Bao was also confirmed by the relevant authorities to be eligible to run for election and was elected chairman of the Vietnam Boxing Federation for the second term (2023 – 2028).

Mr. Bao’s near “disappearance” from the boxing community and his absence from managing the national federation is causing a stir and confusion among the public.

The Vietnamese boxing community is abuzz with the news that the chairman of the Vietnam Boxing Federation – Mr. Luu Tu Bao – has been out of contact for many months after traveling from Vietnam to the United States and is not directly managing the federation’s work.
