The Economic Court in Alexandria issued a ruling against the Egyptian blogger known as Kuruan Mishakel, sentencing him to two years in prison with hard labor and fining him 200,000 Egyptian pounds, on charges of publishing content deemed offensive to public decency on the TikTok application.
Bail and Criminal Costs
The court also ordered Mishakel to pay criminal costs and a bail of 50,000 Egyptian pounds, in addition to confiscating the items seized in connection with the case.
The case dates back to last May, when security authorities monitored videos published on his social media accounts that included phrases and scenes considered by investigative authorities to violate laws regulating electronic publishing and to be contrary to societal values.
Violative Content
After Mishakel was detained in Alexandria, the Economic Prosecution Office began investigations before referring him to the Economic Misdemeanor Court, which issued its final verdict.
The Egyptian Ministry of Interior previously stated that the arrest of Kuruan Mishakel was for publishing content that “conflicts with societal values,” noting that he admitted during investigations that the purpose of the videos was to achieve high viewership rates and financial profits through digital platforms.
Account Blocking
The Supreme Council for Media Regulation in Egypt had previously blocked and closed his electronic accounts on social media platforms, referring the incident to the Public Prosecution.
The case sparked widespread debate in Egypt over recent months, amid escalating discussions about the limits of content published on digital platforms and the legal and ethical responsibility borne by content creators in the race for views.
