The General Authority for Roads announced that the Saudi Road Code contributes to supporting shipping traffic by adopting a long-term strategic planning methodology for truck movement on the road network, as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the quality of logistics services and raise the operational efficiency of roads.

Strategic Planning for Truck Movement

This approach includes conducting comprehensive studies of shipping traffic at both the national and regional levels, aiming to accommodate actual requirements and identify the most suitable routes for trucks, while involving all relevant parties in the shipping sector in the planning stages. The code includes allocating specific roads and areas for truck movement, regulating their passage on major roads with high traffic volumes, as well as reducing intersection points between pedestrian traffic and truck routes to enhance public safety.

Improving Safety and Reducing Congestion

The authority confirmed that these measures collectively aim to reduce truck trip times, limit carbon emissions, lower levels of traffic congestion caused by shipping traffic, in addition to improving the safety and operational efficiency of the road network. It indicated that the Road Code serves as a comprehensive technical reference for all entities responsible for the road sector in the kingdom, including ministries, city development authorities, regional secretariats, and municipal governments of cities and governorates, enabling them to access the information, guidelines, technical drawings, procedures, and checklists necessary for planning, designing, implementing, operating, and maintaining all types of roads, while taking into account environmental requirements and safety standards, to achieve the minimum acceptable levels of quality, safety, security, economic efficiency, and sustainability.

Comprehensive Technical Reference for Relevant Entities

It is noted that the General Authority for Roads has been entrusted with overseeing and regulating the road sector, by setting necessary policies and legislation, including the launch of the Saudi Road Code. The authority continues to expand the application of modern technical standards aimed at improving the experience of road users, ensuring the highest levels of safety, efficiency, and sustainability, towards achieving the kingdom’s goal of reaching sixth place globally in road quality by the year 2030.

Saudi Road Code

The Saudi Road Code is the official traffic and driving regulation system in Saudi Arabia, introduced to standardize road safety, licensing, and vehicle rules across the kingdom. Its modern history includes major updates following the 2018 lifting of the ban on women driving, which led to new licensing procedures and infrastructure adaptations. The code continues to evolve to improve road safety, enforce traffic laws, and accommodate the country’s rapidly growing transportation network.
