Romania summoned the Russian ambassador to denounce a Russian drone violating its airspace during an attack on Ukraine the previous day, stating that Moscow’s actions represent a new challenge to Black Sea security, days after drones violated Polish airspace.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a release that Bucharest informed the ambassador of its strongly-worded protest against this unacceptable and irresponsible act.
Furthermore, it urged the Russian side to take all necessary measures to avoid a repetition of such a violation of Romania’s sovereignty.
The ministry told the ambassador that “such repeated incidents contribute to escalation and the worsening of the threat to regional security.”
The statement emphasized that Romania, a member of NATO and the European Union, “remains in constant contact with its allies.”
A New Challenge to Security and Stability
The Romanian Ministry of Defense considered the incident a “new challenge to security and stability in the Black Sea region.”
It added that “such incidents show the Russian Federation’s disregard for international law.”
The statement clarified that the drone was of the “Geran” type, which Russia uses in its attacks on Ukraine.

It added: “The pilots received authorization to shoot down the target, but at the moment they had direct contact, they worked to assess the collateral risks and decided not to open fire.”
