Mecca
Mecca, located in western Saudi Arabia, is the holiest city in Islam and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad. It is home to the Masjid al-Haram (the Grand Mosque), which contains the Kaaba, a cube-shaped structure that Muslims worldwide face during prayer. For centuries, Mecca has been a central site of pilgrimage (Hajj), a religious duty for Muslims, and its history dates back to pre-Islamic times as a trading hub.
Medina
Medina, located in western Saudi Arabia, is the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca. It is historically significant as the place where the Prophet Muhammad migrated in 622 CE, an event known as the Hijra, and where he established the first Muslim community. The city is home to the Prophet’s Mosque, which contains his tomb, and remains a major pilgrimage destination for Muslims.
Riyadh
Riyadh is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia, located in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula. Its history dates back to the 18th century as a small walled settlement, but it grew into a major political and economic hub after the unification of Saudi Arabia in 1932. Today, Riyadh is a modern metropolis known for its skyscrapers, cultural landmarks like the Masmak Fortress, and its role as the country’s center of government and commerce.
Dammam
Dammam is the capital of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, a major port city on the Persian Gulf. Its modern development began in the 20th century with the discovery of oil, transforming a small fishing village into a vital industrial and commercial hub. Today, it is known for its modern architecture, the King Fahd Causeway connecting to Bahrain, and its role as the administrative center for Saudi Aramco.
Jeddah
Jeddah is a major port city in Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea, historically serving as a key gateway for pilgrims traveling to Mecca. Its history dates back to pre-Islamic times, but it gained prominence in the 7th century under Caliph Uthman, who developed it as a commercial and religious hub. Today, the city’s historic district, Al-Balad, features traditional coral-stone architecture and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Abha
Abha is a city in southwestern Saudi Arabia, renowned for its cool climate and mountainous terrain, serving as the capital of the Asir Province. Its history dates back centuries as a strategic trading and agricultural hub, and it later became a key Ottoman administrative center before being incorporated into Saudi Arabia in the 1920s. Today, Abha is a popular tourist destination, known for its traditional architecture, vibrant markets, and nearby natural attractions like the Asir National Park.
Hail
Hail is a historic city in northwestern Saudi Arabia, known for its role as a key stop on the ancient caravan route linking Arabia to Mesopotamia and the Levant. It was once the capital of the powerful Al Rashid dynasty in the 19th century, who rivaled the Al Saud family for control of the Arabian Peninsula. Today, Hail is recognized for its cultural heritage, including the well-preserved mud-brick fortresses of A’arif and Qishlah, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site candidate.
Buraidah
Buraidah is the capital of the Al-Qassim Province in central Saudi Arabia, known for its rich agricultural heritage, particularly as a major producer of dates. Historically, it has served as an important trading and cultural hub, with roots dating back to the pre-Islamic era, and it played a key role in the unification of Saudi Arabia under King Abdulaziz in the early 20th century. Today, the city blends modern development with traditional markets and festivals, such as the annual Buraidah Date Festival.
