Moscow region

The Moscow region, officially known as Moscow Oblast, is the federal subject surrounding but not including the capital city of Moscow. Historically, it developed as the protective hinterland and economic heartland of the Russian state, dotted with ancient towns like Kolomna and Zvenigorod that served as important defensive and religious centers from the Middle Ages onward. Today, it is a major industrial and cultural area, famous for its historic estates, monasteries like the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in Sergiev Posad, and its role in pivotal events throughout Russian history.
