The first snow of the season fell in the mountains of the resort city on October 10 at an altitude of over 2,200 meters.
According to specialists, the snow has not yet formed a stable cover necessary for skiing, but nighttime temperatures in the mountains have already dropped to -1°C, while daytime temperatures do not exceed +3°C.
The ski season is planned to open first in Krasnaya Polyana. Based on current data, this year’s start is expected in the first ten days of December.
“Thanks to its geographical location, the Krasnaya Polyana resort is the first to open the ski season in the Sochi mountain cluster. Last year, the first snow fell here on October 17, and due to consistent snowfall throughout November, the ski season was able to open as early as December 6,” noted the resort’s press service regarding the similarity of the seasons.
Currently, Krasnaya Polyana is completing the technical maintenance of equipment for artificial snowmaking on slopes and avalanche control systems. The full cycle is divided into several stages, with the final stage scheduled for completion by the end of November.
The height of snowdrifts in the mountains of Sochi reached significant levels by the morning of October 11. The Balkan cyclone “Barbara” brought abnormal rainfall to the coast and snowfall to the mountain part of the resort. Overnight, at altitudes above 2,300 meters, about 20 cm of precipitation fell. As of 9:00 AM on October 11, the snow cover depth reached 39 cm.
