Makkah
Makkah (Mecca) is the holiest city in Islam, located in Saudi Arabia. It is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the site of the Kaaba, the most sacred shrine in Islam, which Muslims believe was built by Abraham and his son Ishmael. Every year, millions of Muslims perform the Hajj pilgrimage to this city, a religious duty that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime.
Madinah
Madinah, officially known as Medina, is a city in western Saudi Arabia of profound religious importance in Islam. It was the destination of the Prophet Muhammad’s migration (Hijrah) in 622 CE and served as the capital of the first Muslim community. It is home to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (The Prophet’s Mosque), which contains his tomb and is one of the two holiest sites in Islam.
Riyadh
Riyadh is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia, serving as a major financial and administrative hub. Historically a walled oasis town and the historic capital of the Najd region, it was captured in 1902 by King Abdulaziz Al Saud, an event that marked the beginning of the modern Saudi state. The city has since undergone rapid modernization, transforming from a traditional desert settlement into a bustling, contemporary metropolis.
Jeddah
Jeddah is a major port city on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, historically serving as the gateway for pilgrims traveling to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Its history is reflected in the historic district of Al-Balad, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its distinctive coral stone architecture and traditional merchant houses. Today, it is a bustling commercial hub that blends its ancient heritage with modern development.
Dammam
Dammam is a major port city and the capital of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, serving as a vital commercial and administrative hub. Its modern history began in the 1930s after the discovery of vast oil reserves in the region, which transformed it from a small fishing village into a key center for the Saudi petroleum industry.
Abha
Abha is the capital city of the Asir region in southwestern Saudi Arabia, known as the «Bride of the Mountain» for its stunning highland scenery and moderate climate. Historically, it was a key stop on ancient trade and pilgrimage routes and is renowned for its distinctive multi-colored, fortified architecture. The city is also a cultural hub for the Asiri people, famous for their traditional art, particularly the ornate floral patterns that decorate homes.
Tabuk
Tabuk is a historically significant city in northwestern Saudi Arabia, known for its ancient roots as a stop on the incense trade route and its mention in Islamic history. It is traditionally believed to be the site where the Prophet Muhammad camped before the Battle of Tabuk in 630 CE. Today, the city serves as a gateway to the Red Sea coast and is a growing agricultural and commercial hub.
Buraidah
Buraidah is the capital of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Qassim Province, known as a major agricultural hub and date-producing region. Historically, it was a key settlement along ancient pilgrimage and trade routes, with its modern development closely tied to the unification of Saudi Arabia in the 20th century.
