CAAP: GenSan Airport open for ‘limited operations’ for government, military, aid flights

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Monday ordered the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to operate at the General Santos Airport to allow military aircraft and government and humanitarian flights following the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit off the coast of Sarangani.

A 5.3-magnitude aftershock hit off the coast of Balut Island, Sarangani late Monday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

PHIVOLCS earlier reported the aftershock was measured at magnitude 5.7, was tectonic in origin with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The tremor that occurred at 10:52 p.m. was tectonic in origin with a depth of four kilometers.

Members of the international community put aside their differences as they extended messages of support for the Philippines after a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Mindanao on Monday morning.

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and its Authorized Agent Corporations (AACs) in Mindanao has mobilized relief aid for those affected by the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani on Monday morning.

In a statement, the PCSO general manager noted that AACs in Mindanao were among those that quickly moved to support residents and coordinate relief efforts with local partners.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Monday ordered all affected local government units (LGUs) in Mindanao to implement emergency response measures after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake and powerful aftershocks struck the region.

The directive came after the President ordered LGUs and national agencies to immediately coordinate disaster response, monitoring, and public safety operations in areas affected by the tremors.

Church leaders offered financial aid to the communities affected by the strong earthquake that struck Sarangani province and nearby areas on Monday morning, according to a report.

“With deep sorrow, I join our brothers and sisters in General Santos City and the surrounding communities who have been affected by the recent earthquake,” said a Manila Archbishop, in his statement aired over Radio Veritas.

Jollibee on Monday said that it has not received any reports of injuries at its stores in areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the waters off Sarangani in Mindanao that morning.

In a statement, the fast food giant also said that all of its employees at its stores in General Santos City have been accounted for after photos and video emerged of a Jollibee store in the city collapsing due to the quake.
