Former high school teacher Sato Hirohira (77) opened “Soba Izakaya Jin” (Miyanosawa, Chuo Ward) in Sapporo after retiring, and it will close at the end of May. The shop, which he ran for about 16 years after an unusual career change, is filled with notebooks and mementos that mark the journey he shared with regulars, including his former students. Although blessed with customers, he decided to bring it to a close as his physical strength has noticeably declined in recent years. “Being able to see my former students grow was the greatest treasure,” he reflects on his second act in life. …
