Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Walkway (Chikaho)

The Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Walkway, commonly known as “Chikaho,” is a sprawling underground pedestrian network connecting Sapporo Station to the Odori area. Built during the city’s rapid post-war development in the 1970s, it was designed to protect pedestrians from Hokkaido’s harsh winter weather while easing street-level traffic congestion. Today, it serves as a bustling commercial and transit hub, lined with shops, restaurants, and direct access to major subway lines.
