In connection with a special fraud base in Cambodia, it has been discovered that generative AI was reportedly used at the facility, following the arrest of a man believed to be a recruiter who sent in phone scammers.

A resident of Nagasaki Prefecture, age 34, was arrested and referred to prosecutors on suspicion of forcing a 35-year-old man into a car last February, threatening him with statements like “Are you running away from your debts?” and taking him to Chubu Centrair International Airport.

Police believe the arrested man acted as a recruiter, sending phone scammers to the Cambodian special fraud base.

Subsequent police investigations revealed that at the base, when phone scammers posed as police officers and made video calls with victims, generative AI was used to swap their faces and voices with those of other people.

Equipment and a dedicated room for this purpose have also been confirmed, and police continue to investigate the full extent of the operation.
