Gen Z has emerged as the primary driver of digital transactions in Indonesia. Based on Bank Indonesia (BI) data, 75.49 million Gen Z individuals, or approximately 27.94% of the total population, actively use QRIS as their daily payment method.

This achievement places Gen Z at the top in adoption, surpassing millennials with 69.9 million users (25.87%), Generation X with 59.12 million (21.88%), baby boomers with 31.23 million (11.56%), and Generation Alpha with 29.9 million users (10.88%).

Since its launch in 2020 until early 2025, QRIS transactions have accumulated to 1.02 billion. This figure far exceeds the transaction volume of GPN debit cards, which recorded only 89.06 million transactions over a longer period, from 2018 to early 2025.

“QRIS has proven to be the most adaptive payment system for today’s digital society. The rapid adoption by younger generations, especially Gen Z and millennials, has been remarkable,” stated a BI representative on Friday (18/7/2025).

Beyond its popularity among younger generations, QRIS has also played a significant role in digitizing Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). As of March 2025, 93% of QRIS merchants are MSMEs, totaling around 38.1 million businesses. Of these, 57.52% are micro-enterprises, 29.59% small businesses, 5.89% medium-sized enterprises, and only 3.37% large businesses.

QRIS is considered the backbone of digital financial inclusion, enabling MSMEs to compete in an increasingly modern payment ecosystem.

Not limited to domestic use, QRIS has expanded to cross-border transactions. Through the Regional Payment Connectivity scheme, QRIS is now integrated with payment systems in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Furthermore, this collaboration will extend to other countries, including India, South Korea, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates, aligning with Indonesia’s international vision through the G20 and ASEAN as outlined in the Indonesian Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) 2030.

“QRIS is no longer just a local payment tool but has become part of a global commitment to digital financial integration between countries,” emphasized the BI representative.

The Head of Bank Indonesia’s East Java Office expressed optimism about the positive trend in QRIS adoption. By early 2025, QRIS users had reached 56.28 million, supported by 38.1 million merchants and 2.3 million EDC (Electronic Data Capture) machines nationwide.

“We did not expect QRIS adoption to grow this quickly. This proves that society welcomes a digital payment system that is easy, secure, and efficient,” the official stated.
