The Indonesian Economics Student Senate Association (ISMEI) East Java Region highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in the governance of non-governmental organization (NGO) funding, particularly from foreign sources.
During a protest held in front of the East Java Police Headquarters and the East Java High Prosecutor’s Office, the demonstrators emphasized the importance of information openness as key to maintaining public trust.
Additionally, they stressed ensuring NGO activities do not conflict with national interests.
Unfortunately, the protest coordinator revealed that some NGOs operating in Indonesia receive foreign funding but are not transparent about it.
“It is important for the government and law enforcement to pay attention to this phenomenon. The state should not remain silent because national unity and stability are at stake,” he said during a speech in front of the East Java High Prosecutor’s Office in Surabaya on Friday, April 24, 2026.
“If there are indications of that, the state must take firm action. Do not stay silent, do not act only when the situation has worsened,” he continued.
The coordinator also urged the government to strengthen laws and regulations concerning NGO funding transparency amid increasing global dynamics and the openness of information and capital flows.
Moreover, more and more non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are operating in Indonesia, so oversight needs to be tightened.
The protest was peaceful and ended with the submission of a statement of stance to law enforcement. Students hope this step will lead to strengthening the governance of civil organizations to be more accountable and professional in Indonesia.
