Efforts to combat illegal cigarettes in Sidoarjo are showing real results. Satpol PP of Sidoarjo Regency together with the Sidoarjo Customs and Excise Office successfully seized nearly 20,000, or 19,940, cigarettes in a joint operation on Wednesday.

From the raid, officers confiscated 997 packs of illegal cigarettes being sold freely at several locations. Three traders in the Buduran and Tulangan sub-districts were also detained for being caught selling various brands of cigarettes without excise stamps.

The traders who were caught are: a resident of Sidokerto Village, Buduran, who was caught selling 510 packs of various cigarette brands on Jalan Raya Sidokepung; a resident of Entalsewu Village, Buduran, with evidence of 355 packs of cigarettes of the brands Angker, Balver, and Suryaku; and a resident of Sudimoro, Tulangan, who was selling 132 packs of cigarettes of the brands Este, Manchester, and Smith on Jalan Ki Hajar Dewantoro, North Tulangan.

Meanwhile, two other locations in Porong and Krembung showed no sales activity when the team conducted the operation.

The Head of the Regional Legislation Enforcement Division emphasized that this action is part of the local government’s commitment to protecting the community as well as state revenue.

“Illegal cigarettes not only harm the state in terms of excise revenue but also potentially endanger public health because they do not undergo supervision according to standards,” he explained.

He also added that the circulation of cigarettes without excise stamps damages a healthy business climate by creating unfair competition for rule-abiding businesses.

This joint operation is not only repressive but also prioritizes educational aspects. The government hopes public awareness will increase so that both businesses and buyers understand the importance of buying official, taxed products.
