Khofifah Indar Parawansa, the Governor of East Java, highlighted the bus’s condition and readiness in the accident involving a group of healthcare workers on Bromo Road, Botoh Village, Lumbang District, Probolinggo Regency, on Sunday.
According to the report from Probolinggo Police, the tourist bus with license plate P 7221 UG from Jember was suspected to have crashed due to brake failure.
Preliminary identification results indicate that the bus, suspected of experiencing brake failure, crashed into a resident’s yard on the right side of the road.
The bus then came to a stop in an overturned and tilted position on the right shoulder of the road, with the front part destroyed and the right-side windows and body shattered.
In this incident, out of a total of 52 passengers, eight were reported dead. Meanwhile, the injured victims received medical treatment at several healthcare facilities.
The injured victims were reported to be receiving care at dr. M. Saleh Hospital in Probolinggo City, Ar Rozy Hospital in Probolinggo City, Tongas Hospital in Probolinggo Regency, as well as Sukapura Community Health Center, Wonomerto Community Health Center, and Lumbang Community Health Center.
Therefore, Khofifah reminded bus transport providers to conduct regular checks on bus conditions and ensure they are roadworthy.
“Always double-check the condition of our vehicles. Especially when carrying passengers, tourist buses must be in roadworthy condition,” emphasized Khofifah on Monday.
On the other hand, the East Java Governor also expressed deep condolences regarding this incident. “On behalf of the East Java Provincial Government, I extend my deepest condolences for the tragedy that befell the tourist bus group in the Mount Bromo area,” she said.
“May all the good deeds of the victims be accepted by Allah SWT, the families left behind be granted patience, and the injured victims be granted swift recovery,” added Khofifah.
As a step to handle this incident, Khofifah has assigned the East Java Transportation Department and Health Department to coordinate with relevant parties.
Khofifah requested the Transportation Department to conduct a thorough evaluation and inspection of the tourist bus fleet, while the Health Department ensures all victims receive optimal medical services.
“Passenger safety must be the top priority. I hope this incident serves as an important lesson so that all fleets undergo regular maintenance and are roadworthy before departure,” she stated.
