BANYUWANGI – The ferocity of the waves in Banyuwangi has claimed another victim. A lobster fry (BBL) or seed shrimp seeker nearly lost his life after the speed boat he was riding capsized after being hit by high waves in the area of Grajagan Village, Banyuwangi.
The victim is identified as Santoso (37), a resident of Kampung Baru Hamlet, RT 04 RW 03, Grajagan Village. At the time of the incident, he was searching for shrimp fry using the speed boat “Paris Jaya” owned by his father, Sudarsono (50).
The tense incident occurred around 4:00 PM local time. Earlier, Santoso departed for the sea around 3:30 PM local time heading to the Pelawangan Grajagan waters, known for having quite extreme currents and waves.
Unfortunately, upon arrival at the shrimp fry search location, the speed boat’s engine suddenly died in the middle of the sea. In unfavorable sea weather conditions, large waves immediately struck the boat’s hull, causing the speed boat to capsize.
“The victim departed around 3:30 PM local time using the ‘Paris Jaya’ speed boat to search for shrimp fry. Upon arriving at the Pelawangan Grajagan area around 4:00 PM local time, the boat’s engine suddenly died,” stated the Grajagan Post Commander.
The high waves rolling over the southern waters of Banyuwangi made it impossible for the victim to control his boat. Santoso was adrift in the middle of the sea before finally holding on to the overturned speed boat’s hull while waiting for help to arrive.
Fortunately, several fishermen who were not far from the location quickly moved to evacuate him. The swift action of the fishermen successfully saved Santoso from the threat of death amidst the fierce waves.
“The victim was successfully rescued by Grajagan fishermen who were near the incident location,” the Grajagan Post report stated.
Around 5:00 PM local time, the speed boat was successfully evacuated and brought to the Grajagan Pier. Although no fatalities occurred, the incident caused the victim’s Yamaha outboard engine to suffer quite severe damage due to the hard impact of the waves.
Meanwhile, the Grajagan Post duty officer received a report of the incident around 6:00 PM local time and immediately visited the victim to conduct data collection and further examination.
He reminded fishermen and shrimp fry seekers to increase caution when going to sea, especially when bad weather conditions hit the southern waters of Banyuwangi.
“This incident serves as a stern warning for fishermen and shrimp fry seekers to be more vigilant when going to sea, especially when bad weather and high waves hit the southern waters of Banyuwangi,” he said.
