Shahidul Miah, an influential TMC leader from Jorpatki in Mathabhanga, has been arrested on charges of taking cuts from beneficiaries of the housing scheme. He had been on the run for the past few days. On Wednesday afternoon, police went to Shahidul’s house, pulled him out from under a bed, and arrested him. It is known that Shahidul Miah’s wife is a member of the Jorpatki Gram Panchayat in Mathabhanga. Shahidul himself was working as a civic volunteer at the Mathabhanga police station. This gave him considerable influence in the area. He introduced himself as a TMC leader. Allegations have been made that Shahidul exploited his influence to take cuts of 5,000, 10,000, and even 20,000 taka from beneficiaries of the housing scheme. On May 25, local residents held a protest demanding his arrest based on these allegations. Since then, the accused TMC leader had been on the run. After the cut-money allegations came to light, the Mathabhanga police station suspended Shahidul. However, he was not seen in the area. Police began searching for him.

Yesterday, Shahidul sneaked into his own house. Locals saw him and informed the police. Learning that the police were coming, Shahidul hid under the bed in his house. The police then pulled the accused out from under the bed and arrested him. As the accused was being taken to the police station, the villagers continued to protest. They demanded that the cut money be returned immediately.
