Pratapgarh, A rape suspect who escaped from police custody at SRN Hospital in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by Manikpur police in Pratapgarh district on Friday night after an encounter. Police provided this information on Saturday.
According to police, the suspect sustained gunshot wounds to both legs, and an illegal firearm and cartridges were recovered from him. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Western region, Brijnandan Rai, said that Jalaluuddin, a resident of Rahwai village in Kotwali Kunda police station area, had raped a two-year-old girl at an acquaintance’s house in a village in the Manikpur area on the night of last Sunday-Monday.
Brijnandan Rai said that police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and arrested the suspect. During questioning, his health deteriorated, and he was admitted to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj, from where he escaped by evading the police personnel.

The ASP said that based on a tip-off, Manikpur police station in-charge inspector Narendra Singh was checking at Karenti intersection with a police team on Friday night. At that time, the fleeing suspect arrived and opened fire on the police team. In the police’s retaliatory action, the suspect was shot in both legs, after which he was arrested. The injured suspect has been admitted to a medical college for treatment. Police said further legal action is being taken against the suspect.
