New Delhi, After a strong bid for the 2036 Olympics and securing the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), India is now eyeing the 2038 Asian Games. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially expressed its desire for this.

On Thursday, the Executive Board of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) met in Sanya, China. India’s proposal was discussed during the meeting. The board has decided that an evaluation team will soon visit the country to assess India’s preparations. Besides India, South Korea and Mongolia have also shown interest in the 2038 slot.

The first Asian Games were held in India in 1951.

Ahmedabad to become a sports hub

Like the 2036 Olympics and 2030 CWG, Ahmedabad will also be the center for the 2038 Asian Games. The Gujarat government has started large-scale construction of sports infrastructure for this purpose.

  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave: Spread over 355 acres near the Narendra Modi Stadium, this area will be the main hub. Aquatics, a tennis center, and an indoor arena are being built here.
  • Karai Sports Hub: In Gandhinagar, an athletics stadium, shooting complex, and other venues are being prepared across 143 acres.

Attempt to return to India after 56 years

India hosted the first Asian Games in 1951. After that, the last time these games were held in India was in 1982. On both occasions, Delhi hosted the event. If India wins the bid for 2038, it will mark the return of the Asian Games to the country after 56 years.

Major event at low cost

IOA officials believe that hosting the 2038 Asian Games is a ‘logical step’ for India. Since infrastructure in Ahmedabad will already be ready for the 2030 CWG and 2036 Olympics, the cost of organizing the Asian Games will be significantly reduced. If India gets to host the 2036 Olympics, the same venues can be used for the Asian Games.
