FIR filed against Abhishek Banerjee over alleged provocative speeches threatening Amit Shah, as West Bengal government withdraws his Z plus security after a review

An FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station over alleged provocative speech made during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign.

In a complaint filed by Rajib Sarkar, Banerjee has been accused of threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The FIR also includes allegations of provocation during election campaign events held between April 27 and May 3.

The complaint alleged that the speeches promoted enmity, disturbed public tranquillity and included threats directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Sarkar also submitted links to several speeches as part of the complaint.

A case was registered by the police on May 15 at 2:45 pm at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station.

The case was filed under Sections 192, 196, 351(2) and 353(1)(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 123(2) and 125 of the Representation of the People Act.

The FIR said that Banerjee’s speeches contained provocative, threatening and inflammatory content capable of creating public disorder and disturbing communal harmony. Sub-Inspector Somnath Singha Roy has been directed to take up the investigation.

Bengal Government Withdraws Z+ Security Cover For Abhishek Banerjee

Earlier, the West Bengal government withdrew the Z-plus security cover provided to Banerjee after a comprehensive security review.

A government official stated that the additional security personnel and special pilot car facility allotted to Abhishek Banerjee will no longer remain in force. Abhishek had enjoyed Z+ security for more than 10 years before it was scaled down when TMC was defeated in the recent election.

The decision came after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari held several meetings in Nabanna on Monday, where issues related to the security cover of politicians were reportedly discussed. The CM conveyed that if there was no serious threat to a politician, then unnecessary security arrangements should not be provided.

Adhikari also questioned why government money should be spent merely to display influence. Administrative sources stated that Abhishek Banerjee’s security arrangements will now be regulated as per the guidelines of the Union Home Ministry.
