This morning, Cyclone Fengal reached the coastal areas of northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. According to the meteorological department, the cyclone will move west-southwest and weaken in the coming hours.

Heavy rain and storms caused by Cyclone Fengal have resulted in three deaths due to electrocution. Incidents occurred in different parts of Chennai, where three individuals lost their lives after being electrocuted.

Following Cyclone Fengal, Puducherry recorded its highest rainfall in three decades, reaching 46 cm. This broke the previous record of 21 cm set on October 31, 2004.

Nearby areas also experienced heavy rainfall, with Cuddalore receiving 23 cm, Chennai Airport and Yercaud recording 14 cm, and several other locations reporting significant downpours. The flooding submerged two runways and a taxiway at Chennai Airport, disrupting numerous domestic and international flights.

The severe weather event on Saturday evening prompted authorities to evacuate people from vulnerable areas to safer locations. Despite the cyclone’s intensity—bringing 44 cm of rain, the highest in 30 years—there were no immediate reports of major damage in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Additionally, due to the cyclone’s impact, Chennai Airport had to suspend operations for 16 hours before resuming flight services at 4 AM today.
