New Method of Cyber Fraud: Bank Accounts Can Be Emptied Without OTP or Card – How to Protect Yourself
A case of cyber fraud has emerged where money can be withdrawn from your account without OTP or card. Criminals are finding new ways to deceive people, and ordinary individuals are often unaware. One such case was reported from Jharkhand, where 10,000 rupees were withdrawn from an elderly woman’s account.
According to the report, fraudsters in Garhwa district, Jharkhand, deceived the woman under the pretext of providing benefits from the PM Kisan scheme. They scanned her eyes and withdrew nearly 10,000 rupees from her account. When the woman went to withdraw money from her bank account the next day, she discovered that the money had been taken.
How Did the Fraud Occur?
Nowadays, all bank accounts are linked to your Aadhaar card. Due to this linkage, anyone can withdraw money from their account using biometric authentication (fingerprint or iris scan). However, banks have set a limit for this. The criminals deceived the woman in the name of the Kisan scheme. They located her bank account using her Aadhaar number and then, without her knowledge, scanned her eyes to withdraw money from the account.
How to Avoid It?
Your vigilance is crucial to avoid any fraud. Do not share your personal documents, especially your Aadhaar card, with anyone. If you need to provide your Aadhaar card somewhere, you should use a virtual Aadhaar number. For this, you must visit the UIDAI website and generate a virtual Aadhaar number. Additionally, you can lock your card’s biometric authentication. However, in such cases, you will need to unlock it when necessary. Afterward, it must be locked again.
Furthermore, you should not fall for any temptations. Cybercriminals use social engineering to deceive people. Individuals are lured with promises of rewards, gifts, government schemes, etc., and then defrauded.
