Eid

“Eid” refers not to a specific place, but to the two major Islamic festivals: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. **Eid al-Fitr** (“Festival of Breaking the Fast”) marks the end of Ramadan, while **Eid al-Adha** (“Festival of Sacrifice”) commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, occurring at the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage. These celebrations, with roots in the 7th century following the Hijra of Prophet Muhammad, are central to Muslim culture, involving communal prayers, charity, feasting, and family gatherings.

Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa is the traditional New Year’s Day for Marathi and Konkani Hindus, primarily celebrated in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It marks the beginning of the Chaitra month and the spring harvest season, with its history linked to the legendary day when Lord Brahma created the universe and the day of the coronation of the great Maratha king, Shivaji. The festival is symbolized by the raising of a *gudi* (a decorated flag-like pole) outside homes to signify victory and prosperity.
