New Delhi: Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh will meet industry stakeholders next week to discuss the potential impact of US President Donald Trump’s announcement of imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods.
The US is India’s largest market for textile and apparel exports, accounting for nearly 25% of the country’s total exports from this sector.
Sources indicate that the meeting will also explore potential benefits for India’s textile sector from the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed last month.
The government and industry are determined to achieve the $100 billion textile export target by 2030 and mitigate any adverse effects of the US tariff announcement.
While it may be premature to discuss specific support measures for domestic textile exporters in response to the US decision, the government seeks industry feedback and aims to evaluate challenges and opportunities, including the UK-India FTA and untapped markets.
According to sources, “We remain in constant dialogue with the industry. The Minister has called for a meeting to engage with key apparel export firms and assess opportunities arising from the UK-India FTA for the textile sector.”
