On September 1, in Tianjin (China), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with the Prime Ministers of Cambodia, Malaysia, India, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations and ASEAN.

While attending the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin (China), there were sideline meetings with the Prime Ministers of Cambodia, Malaysia, India, and the Secretaries-General of the United Nations and ASEAN on September 1.

Aiming for Vietnam – Cambodia trade turnover to reach 20 billion USD

At the meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, gratitude was expressed for the Chairman of the Cambodian People’s Party and President of the Senate Hun Sen’s attendance at the upcoming 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam’s National Day on September 2, demonstrating the close and solidary relationship between the two countries.

The Prime Minister proposed that both sides continue to consolidate political trust and promote bilateral cooperation mechanisms; strive to achieve a trade turnover of 20 billion USD in the near future; commit to enhancing transport connectivity, simplifying cross-border transport procedures, and strengthening tourism cooperation.

Both sides agreed to promote the completion of land border demarcation between Vietnam and Cambodia, soon complete the Phnom Penh – Bavet expressways, and inaugurate the shared Tan Nam – Meun Chey border gate; jointly exchanged on regional and global issues of mutual concern.

During the meeting with Prime Minister Ibrahim Anwar, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated Malaysia’s efforts as ASEAN Chair in addressing common regional issues and expressed a desire to enhance cooperation in Halal industries, rice trade, and maritime cooperation.

The Malaysian Prime Minister proposed strengthening fisheries cooperation. He expressed hope to welcome Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to the ASEAN Summit in October.

Both sides agreed on measures to strengthen cooperation and promote collaboration in defense, energy, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

At the meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two leaders emphasized that there is still much potential for cooperation to make the relationship more profound, practical, and effective; agreed on the need for breakthroughs in economic, trade, and investment cooperation, maximizing the geo-economic advantages and market potential of both sides; making defense and security cooperation a strategic focus in the relationship; further expanding science and technology cooperation to become a key area of collaboration between the two countries.

Vietnam’s commitment to multilateralism

During the meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed the situation and multifaceted challenges facing the world, expressing hope that countries will enhance cooperation in responding to climate change.

United Nations

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after World War II to promote peace, security, and cooperation among nations. It was established to replace the ineffective League of Nations and is headquartered on an international territory in New York City. The UN provides a forum for its 193 member states to address global issues such as conflict, human rights, and sustainable development.

ASEAN

ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is a regional intergovernmental organization established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, by its five founding members. It was created to promote political and economic cooperation, as well as regional stability, among its members. The association has since expanded to include ten member states, fostering greater economic integration and cultural exchange throughout Southeast Asia.

August Revolution

The August Revolution refers to the 1945 uprising in which the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh, seized power from the French colonial administration and the Japanese occupation forces. This pivotal event led to the end of the Nguyen Dynasty and the declaration of Vietnam’s independence, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

Vietnam’s National Day

Vietnam’s National Day, celebrated annually on September 2nd, commemorates the day in 1945 when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence in Hanoi’s Ba Dinh Square, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. This event marked the end of French colonial rule and the beginning of the country’s modern independent state. The day is a major public holiday observed with nationwide celebrations, including flag-raising ceremonies, parades, and fireworks.

Phnom Penh – Bavet expressways

The Phnom Penh–Bavet Expressway is Cambodia’s first major expressway, connecting the capital city to the Bavet international border gate with Vietnam. Inaugurated in late 2022, this 190 km toll road was constructed as a key infrastructure project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative to boost trade and regional connectivity. It has significantly reduced travel time and serves as a vital economic corridor.

Tan Nam – Meun Chey border gate

The Tan Nam – Meun Chey border gate is a key land crossing between Vietnam’s Bình Phước province and Cambodia’s Tboung Khmum province. Historically, it was a less formal crossing point that gained official international status to facilitate trade and travel, strengthening economic ties between the two neighboring countries.

ASEAN Summit

The ASEAN Summit is the highest policy-making body of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), an intergovernmental organization established in 1967 to promote regional stability and economic cooperation. The summit, first held in Bali, Indonesia in 1976, brings together the heads of state and government from the ten member countries to set the strategic direction for the bloc.
