Xiangyang Section of Xiangyang-Yichang Expressway Construction Progressing Rapidly, Set to Connect with Yichang Section by End of Next Year
On October 10th, at the entrance of the Dalingshan No. 2 Tunnel on the Xiangyang section of the Xiangyang-Yichang Expressway, the roar of excavators accompanied by firecrackers marked the official start of the first tunnel excavation work on this section. The tunnel is 2,850 meters long and utilizes a dual-boom drilling jumbo for construction, adopting a two-way excavation method. It is scheduled for completion in December next year.
The Xiangyang to Yichang Expressway’s Xiangyang section is part of the Pingdingshan to Yichang Expressway. The project starts at Fangjiaji in Jiuji Town, Nanzhang County, Xiangyang City, and ends near Dagutai at the Xiangyang-Yichang border, connecting with the Yichang section of the Pingdingshan to Yichang Expressway. The total route length is 55.708 kilometers, with a bridge-tunnel ratio of 46.87%.
To meet the goal of completing the Pingdingshan-Yichang Expressway by the end of 2026, a “100-Day Sprint” labor competition has been organized, and a leadership shift-based supervision system has been established to ensure efficient progress of all tasks. Currently, all five sections of the project have entered the main construction phase.
The 532-meter-long Yuntaishan Reservoir Bridge is one of the key control projects of the Xiangyang section of the Xiangyang-Yichang Expressway and the only continuous rigid-frame cantilever cast-in-place bridge on the entire route. At the construction site, the sound of machinery and welding sparks fill the air as the two main piers on opposite sides of the water are being built simultaneously.
The No. 5 pier of the bridge has completed its foundation pile work, while the No. 6 pier is currently undergoing pile foundation construction. The project will utilize “smart hanging baskets” and “5G tower crane” cantilever casting technology to ensure rapid progress.
More than 600 workers and 154 pieces of machinery are operating simultaneously on-site, creating a full-scale “fast-track” construction effort to ensure high-quality and efficient synchronization with the Yichang section.
The Pingdingshan-Yichang Expressway’s Xiangyang section is a critical link in the Hubei provincial “Golden Triangle” transportation network connecting Wuhan, Xiangyang, and Yichang, and is a key transportation project in the provincial development plan. Once completed, the travel time between Xiangyang and Yichang will be reduced from 3 hours to 1.5 hours, significantly promoting coordinated development in the region.
