Shanghai Jiao Tong University officially launched the first National “AI + Energy” College Student Science and Technology Innovation Competition. This competition is the first of its kind in China, focusing on the deep integration of artificial intelligence and energy—two strategic fields. It aims to build an industry-academia-research-application innovation platform, stimulate the innovative vitality of young students, and provide talent support for the country’s green energy transition and intelligent development.

The competition features two tracks: “AI + Energy Scientific Research” and “AI + Energy Engineering Applications.” These cover both cutting-edge exploration in the energy field, guiding students to break through the boundaries of traditional energy research and explore new models, methods, and paradigms for AI in complex energy systems, as well as practical needs in the energy sector, leading students to apply AI technology to solve real engineering problems in energy production, transmission, storage, consumption, and management, and to propose new business formats, models, and services for the energy industry based on artificial intelligence.

The competition will focus on promoting effective alignment between academic research and industry needs, building a full chain from “basic research—technology development—engineering demonstration.” Well-known companies in the energy field have already expressed strong interest in cooperating to incubate competition results and recruit talent. Winning entries may receive corporate support to further transform innovative ideas into practical production. The final stage will also include an on-site命题 competition to comprehensively evaluate participating teams’ AI knowledge and application skills. Students’ performance in this segment will serve as an important reference for expert scoring during the finals, avoiding over-packaging of entries and selecting truly outstanding talent capable of integrating theory with practice.

Currently, the global energy landscape is undergoing profound changes. Promoting the green transformation of the energy structure and the intelligent upgrading of the industry has become a major national demand. Artificial intelligence technology, as a strategic technology leading the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, is reshaping the innovation paradigms and development paths in the energy field.

In response to the need for energy talent cultivation in the AI era, on May 24, at the 2025 “AI + Energy” Academic Seminar held at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University State Power Investment Corporation Smart Energy Innovation College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, together with Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Tianjin University, and Dalian University of Technology, jointly released an initiative for the “AI + Energy” College Student Extracurricular Science and Technology Innovation Competition. The goal is to use the competition as a vehicle to discover and cultivate a large number of interdisciplinary talents with innovative thinking, proficiency in AI technology, and energy expertise.

The competition is led by Professor Huang Zhen, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and has received guidance and support from the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Guidance Committee for Energy and Power Majors, the Teaching Guidance Committee for Electrical Majors, and the National Energy Storage Technology Industry-Education Integration Innovation Platform. The registration channel will officially open on September 10, 2025, and remain open until October 18. Undergraduate and graduate students from universities across the country can form teams and participate through the competition’s official website.
