Shanghai Cooperation Organization
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance founded in 2001 by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It originated from the “Shanghai Five” mechanism, which was formed in 1996 to resolve border disputes and build trust among member states following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The organization has since expanded its focus to include combating terrorism and extremism while promoting cooperation on regional security and economic development.
