Jakarta

A truck driver dumped sewage into the Ciliwung River from the Cijago Toll Bridge. The driver’s actions were recorded and went viral on social media.

The initial information was received from the Cijago Toll Manager regarding the dumping of sewage from the toll road on Sunday (31/8) afternoon. The license plate number of the truck was immediately tracked.

«So, I received the information from the IG account of the Cijago Toll Area Manager. I was sent the information, and fortunately, the license plate number was visible from an environmental enthusiast’s IG post. I immediately checked the license plate number, found the address, and tracked it down that same afternoon,» a spokesperson stated.

When tracked, the truck was identified as being in Jatiasih, Bekasi. Authorities then met with the person who had rented the truck.

«I tracked it to Jatiasih, found it there, and met the vehicle renter, not the owner, because the owner only rents out the vehicle, for example, for Rp 6 million a month,» they said.

The renter, it was said, admitted to hiding the truck. The renter was confused because both the driver and the truck assistant had fled after the incident went viral on social media.

«Well, the renter was also confused, ‘Sir, I’ve secured my vehicle, Sir, I’m afraid because the driver and assistant have run away after seeing the post on IG. They fled, left immediately, and didn’t return home, no one knows where they went’,» they recounted.

Truck Renter Apologizes

The renter was then asked to apologize to the Cijago Toll authority and to make a formal statement promising not to repeat the action.

«Alright then, ‘As the responsible party who rented this vehicle, can you come to the Cijago Toll office?’ ‘Yes, Sir,’ he said, though he was initially afraid. ‘It’s fine, just be assured that this is to account for the actions of your employees, just come and I will accompany you’,» they said.

«He (the renter) made a stamped official statement, he was afraid to come. Eventually, he did come to the office, and I then accompanied him to the Cijago office to make a statement before the management,» they added.

Witness Testimony: Nauseating Experience

The person who recorded the video, a member of the Sahabat Ciliwung community, recounted the background of the event that occurred on Sunday (31/8). Initially, members of the Ciliwung Community were practicing rafting and noticed a foul smell.

Based on the video, the truck was on the Cijago Toll Road, with a hose extending down towards the Ciliwung River and dumping sewage. The witness who caught the truck in the act felt nauseous seeing the sewage being dumped.

«Suddenly someone was pouring something out, I wondered what it was, it turned out to smell terrible. Because it was difficult to access the area under the toll road from the ground, we finally climbed up via the bridge embankment,» the witness stated.
