Despite the Bombay High Court’s order, it has come to light that air pollution increased during the midnight hours in the important cities of the district due to fireworks continuing late into the night. On both Monday and Tuesday, the air in Ulhasnagar and Badlapur was comparatively the most polluted. The air quality index in Ulhasnagar and Badlapur cities was at a poor level. Also, the amount of PM 2.5 in all the cities reached dangerous and extremely dangerous levels.

Firecrackers were allowed during Diwali from 8 pm to 10 pm due to deteriorating air quality in the metropolis. However, in Ulhasnagar, Badlapur, and Bhiwandi cities of Thane district, firecrackers were set off until late at night. There was a significant increase in air pollution between Monday and Tuesday night. On Monday, the air quality index of Ulhasnagar city was recorded as 322, a very poor level. In Badlapur, the air quality index was recorded as 231, a poor level.

The rest of the cities, Thane, Kalyan, and Bhiwandi, recorded a moderate air quality index. The air quality index was recorded at a poor level of 264 on Tuesday at the air quality monitoring center in Upvan in Thane city. The air quality index was recorded at a poor level of 220 in Ulhasnagar and 206 in Badlapur city. 195 in Bhiwandi and 181 in Kalyan were recorded as a moderate air quality index.

The air quality index is most polluted at midnight. The PM 2.5 component reaches hazardous and ultra-hazardous levels at midnight. PM 2.5 concentrations ranged from 300 to 500 (micrograms per cubic meter) at midnight in all cities.
