Where is the garbage station in the community, the community, property management, and residents’ representatives discuss ways to solve it; how to renovate old houses in rural areas, village officials and new and old villagers discuss ways to find a pathway; how to use government funds, discuss and ask for public opinion… This is a vivid practice of grassroots democracy in Zhejiang.
During his work in Zhejiang, Xi Jinping attached great importance to the construction of grassroots democracy, emphasizing that it is an important guarantee for achieving political stability and social harmony. “Democratic consultation”, born in Wenling, Zhejiang in 1999, has played an important role in social governance and the construction of grassroots democratic politics from cities to villages, from resolving mass contradictions to coordinating public interests. Under the promotion of Comrade Xi Jinping, grassroots democratic practices such as “democratic consultation” have continued to deepen and innovate. In June 2005, Comrade Xi Jinping visited Songjian Village in Wenling City and fully affirmed the effectiveness of promoting the construction of new rural areas through “democratic consultation”.
