Mumbai Police has taken major action against cybercrimes, blocking over 11,000 mobile numbers in the past 19 months that were used by fraudsters to deceive city residents. Officials state that this action is crucial to curb cyber fraud and protect the hard-earned money of common people.

Over ₹300 Crore Saved
According to the police’s cyber wing, since the launch of the ‘1930’ helpline in May 2022, over ₹300 crore has been saved for victims of cybercrimes. This helpline has proven extremely helpful for those who have been targeted by fraud.

Over 1.319 Million Calls Received
According to the police, the cyber wing has received over 1.319 million calls from May 2022 until now. Out of these, 131,000 cases were formally registered. Complaints included cases such as share trading-investment fraud, digital arrest, online task fraud, online shopping scams, loan fraud, and job fraud.

SIM Cards Obtained Using Fake Documents
In most of these cases, criminals obtained SIM cards using fake documents or purchased them from genuine users and misused them. After investigation, police have so far blocked 11,063 such mobile numbers to disrupt criminal networks and prevent further fraud against people.

Police officials say that these new tactics by cybercriminals are easily trapping people. Fraudsters lure people through social media, online shopping platforms, and fake apps, and then steal their personal information and money.

Mumbai Police has appealed to citizens not to click on any unknown links, to take suspicious calls or messages seriously, and to immediately register a complaint on the ‘1930’ helpline. Additionally, if any financial transaction seems suspicious, notify the bank and police immediately.

Police claim that the actions taken so far have significantly curbed cybercrime. However, unless people remain vigilant themselves, fraudsters will continue trying to target them with new methods.
