Connor McDavid’s next contract will be for 7 years, predicts Oilers insider.
Connor McDavid’s long-term future in Edmonton has been a major topic of discussion, but an Oilers insider believes the captain is not going anywhere. Speaking on a sports radio show, it was stated that he expects McDavid’s next contract to keep him in Edmonton for many more years.
It was noted that under the updated collective bargaining agreement starting in 2027, seven years will become the maximum contract term. The importance of involving star players in organizational decisions was also discussed.
McDavid is currently under contract through the 2027-28 season, having signed a two-year, $25 million extension with Edmonton. Once that contract expires, he will be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent. A seven-year deal would end most speculation about McDavid’s future and ensure Edmonton retains its franchise player for the long term.
The Oilers are coming off a disappointing 2025-26 season that ended with a first-round playoff loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Despite the early exit, McDavid once again added to his list of individual achievements during the season.
Connor McDavid added to his already impressive resume during the 2025-26 season. The Oilers captain won the Ted Lindsay Award for the fifth time in his career, tying Wayne Gretzky for the most wins in the award’s history. The honor is determined by a vote of the players and recognizes the league’s most outstanding player.
The 29-year-old led the season with 138 points, including 48 goals and 90 assists. He recorded points in 68 of the 82 games played, including 43 multi-point performances. McDavid also achieved two significant milestones during the campaign, recording his 400th career goal and 1,200th point. Since entering the league in 2015-16, no player has recorded more points than the Oilers captain.
