On the morning of June 8, an inspection of innovation and industrial development in brain-computer interface technology took place at the Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Development Zone. It was emphasized that the major historical opportunities presented by the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation must be seized, actively responding to the new demands of the people in the new era for a high quality of life, especially for health and happiness. The comparative advantages of Hubei in areas such as science and technology education and medical health should be fully leveraged. Adhering to demand-driven and innovation-led approaches was stressed, promoting the rapid and healthy development of the province’s brain-computer interface industry with a systematic and pragmatic mindset.

The first visit was to the Optics Valley International Brain-Computer Interface Innovation Center, Wuhan Zhonghua Brain-Computer Company, and the Brain-Computer Interface Research Institute at Tongji Hospital to understand the progress of brain-computer interface technology research, results transformation, and industry cultivation. The trial production and clinical application progress of brain-computer interface products was inspected, and work reports from relevant provincial departments were heard.

It was emphasized that to advance the innovation and industrial development of brain-computer interface technology in the province, it is essential to focus on brain science research as the core. The integrated innovation of “brain, engineering, digital, intelligence, and medicine” and the collaborative innovation of industry, academia, research, and application should be taken as the basic path. Technology finance should be used as the key support, and leading enterprises and core enterprises in the industry should be relied upon as the main foundation. The focus should be on three key links of industrial innovation: scientific research, results transformation, and industry cultivation, with efforts to strengthen strengths and make up for weaknesses. First, vigorously promote innovation collaboration by fully leveraging the guiding role of innovation policies and government services. Further integrate resources from universities, research institutes, medical institutions, and key enterprises, and carry out collaborative research and innovative applications around key core technologies in fields such as acoustics, optics, electromagnetics, and related to brain science and brain-computer interfaces, striving to produce a batch of original and leading results. Second, accelerate the transformation of results by further strengthening the two supports of “venture capital and incubation platforms,” providing full-chain and full-process services for the transformation and market application of high-value patents in the brain-computer interface field from home and abroad in Hubei. Third, pragmatically carry out industry cultivation by guiding and supporting industry enterprises to innovate in product technology, business models, and management to shape market competitive advantages. By guiding and supporting leading industry enterprises to merge, reorganize, and integrate innovation resources, industrial resources, financial resources, and scenario resources in the brain-computer interface field, strive to rapidly expand and strengthen the province’s brain-computer interface industry.

It was demanded that relevant regions, departments, and units across the province strengthen coordination and collaboration. By adopting effective measures such as “building cross-departmental promotion mechanisms, improving industry guidance policies, forming industry-academia-research-application collaborative innovation alliances, establishing exclusive venture capital and industry investment funds, creating high-level innovation buildings or parks, and holding market-oriented and professional summit forums and exhibitions,” accelerate the creation of a world-class industrial innovation ecosystem with deep integration of “industry chain, innovation chain, talent chain, and capital chain,” providing fundamental guarantees for the innovation and industrial development of brain-computer interface technology in the province.

Vice Governor and Mayor of Wuhan participated in the investigation.
