The Criminal Investigation Unit arrested 13 suspects in motor vehicle theft cases in West Bandung and Cimahi City within the last eight days.
The Cimahi Police Chief explained that the detained suspects carried out their actions in several areas such as South Cimahi, Batujajar, Gunung Halu, as well as Bandung City and Bandung Regency.
“From nine police reports we successfully uncovered, there are 13 suspects detained along with nine stolen vehicles,” he said on Saturday (6/6/2026).
He added that in carrying out their thefts, the perpetrators generally targeted vehicles parked in residential areas, housing complexes, and boarding houses.
“The thefts mostly occurred in the early morning, between 00.00 and 04.00 local time when the environment is relatively quiet. From the investigation, the targeted locations were mostly residences or areas with many parked vehicles,” he said.
He mentioned that the method used by the perpetrators involved damaging the motorcycle’s keyhole using a special tool to obtain the victim’s motorcycle that had been previously targeted.
“In addition, they also used a method of cutting the vehicle’s electrical socket with special scissors so the motorcycle could be started without the original key,” he said.
Still according to the Police Chief, in uncovering these cases, they found practices of falsifying vehicle identities from the perpetrators’ crimes.
“The examination results revealed that the perpetrators sold stolen motorcycles at varying prices, ranging from 2 million to 2.5 million rupiah per unit,” he said.
“The selling price could increase if the vehicle was equipped with documents such as a vehicle registration certificate or ownership certificate, making it appear legitimate when marketed as a used motorcycle,” he added.
For their actions, the suspects are charged under Article 477 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code related to aggravated theft. They face a maximum prison sentence of seven years.
