Nara’s “Asuka-Fujiwara Capital” is expected to be registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Asuka-Fujiwara Capital

The Asuka-Fujiwara Capital refers to the ancient political and cultural heart of Japan during the Asuka period (538–710 CE), centered in present-day Nara Prefecture. This area served as the seat of the imperial court and saw the introduction of Buddhism, the development of a centralized government based on Chinese models, and the construction of early palaces like the Fujiwara Palace (built in the late 7th century). Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserving key archaeological remains that illustrate Japan’s formative transition from clan-based rule to a state system.
