Japan praised Ethiopia for successfully conducting its seventh general elections, commending the efforts of the country’s electoral authorities and the active participation of citizens in the democratic process.
In a statement published on social media, the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia congratulated the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia for its efforts in organizing and managing the elections held nationwide on June 1, 2026.
Japan commended the National Electoral Board for overseeing the electoral process and praised the significant efforts made to facilitate voting throughout Ethiopia.
The embassy also congratulated all candidates who participated in the elections, appreciating their contribution to the country’s democratic development.
Japan also praised Ethiopian citizens who exercised their right to vote, emphasizing the vital role of public participation in strengthening democratic governance.

Ethiopia and Japan have established diplomatic relations and cooperate across a wide range of sectors, including development, education, infrastructure, health, and governance.
Earlier, election observation missions from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) described the 2026 elections as a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s democratic and electoral journey.
Similarly, the European Union delegation to Ethiopia, along with diplomatic missions of EU member states, welcomed the conduct of the seventh general elections, describing them as an important democratic exercise.
