On June 5, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health announced that on the same day, it organized a signing ceremony for a program to enhance support for regional medical centers in the former Ba Ria – Vung Tau area.

To improve the capacity of regional medical centers and meet the growing healthcare needs of the population, the city’s health sector is implementing three coordinated support models tailored to each locality.

Although the implementation methods differ, all models aim to build medical examination and treatment capacity at the grassroots level, helping people access high-quality healthcare services close to their homes, reducing pressure on higher-level hospitals, and creating a foundation for sustainable development of the regional health system.

The first model involves the temporary rotation of doctors and staff from city hospitals to directly provide medical services at local facilities.

This solution is applied to areas facing workforce shortages or with special characteristics, such as the Con Dao Special Zone Military-Civilian Medical Center and the Ho Tram Regional Medical Center.

Doctors, nurses, and technicians are assigned to work for a set period to directly treat patients, while also training, transferring techniques, and supporting the capacity building of local medical teams.

The second model assigns a hospital to provide comprehensive support to a regional medical center.

Under this, a capable hospital will partner with and comprehensively support a regional medical center in expertise, workforce training, hospital management, technique transfer, teleconsultation, and developing specialties suited to the local needs.

In this phase, Vung Tau General Hospital is tasked with supporting the Long Dat Regional Medical Center, while Ba Ria General Hospital supports the Chau Duc Regional Medical Center.

The third model involves merging and converting regional medical centers into hospital branches. This is the deepest level of support, aimed at maximizing the professional resources, workforce, and management capabilities of major hospitals.

Under this direction, some regional medical centers with suitable locations and conditions will be studied for conversion into branches of city hospitals once approved by competent authorities.

Specifically, the Phu My Regional Medical Center will initially receive comprehensive support and soon be converted into a branch of Gia Dinh People’s Hospital when conditions are met.

On the same day, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health also organized a signing ceremony for a comprehensive support program between Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital and Pham Huu Chi Lung Hospital.

Accordingly, Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital will partner to support the leading specialized lung disease hospital in the region in areas of expertise, training, technique transfer, scientific research, and hospital management, contributing to enhancing treatment capacity for respiratory diseases and tuberculosis for the local population.

To improve the professional capacity of Ba Ria General Hospital, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has mobilized seven final-tier hospitals to provide comprehensive support, building the hospital into the southeastern gateway of the city.

Con Dao Special Zone Military-Civilian Medical Center

The Con Dao Special Zone Military-Civilian Medical Center is a historic medical facility located on Con Dao Island, Vietnam, originally established during the French colonial period to serve both military personnel and local civilians.
