A trial was held for the case of a male university student who died after being subjected to a group assault in Ebetsu City, Hokkaido. During the questioning of the defendant, a woman apologized to the bereaved family.

The prosecution is expected to announce its sentencing demand later.

Three individuals are charged with robbery resulting in death: defendants Kanon Kawamura, Kaiu Takizawa, and a minor.

The defendants are accused of conspiring with defendant Ama Yagihara, who was in a relationship with Tomoya Hase, and others at a park in Ebetsu City in October 2024. They allegedly assaulted Hase, causing his death, and stole cash and cards.

On June 5, the defendant questioning was conducted. Defendant Kawamura apologized to the bereaved family, saying, “I am sorry for taking a precious life.”

When asked what the family likely wants, he stated, “I think they want me to atone with my death or want me to stay in prison for life.”

The Sapporo District Court has ruled that the charge of robbery resulting in death is established. The trial is currently proceeding separately regarding the circumstances and sentencing for the three defendants.

The prosecution is scheduled to announce its sentencing demand for defendant Kawamura on June 5.
