Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a ceasefire mediated by the United States, but the top leader of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah has indicated he will reject the agreement. Hezbollah’s top leader, Sheikh Qassem, emphasized on the 4th that, amid ongoing attacks, demanding Hezbollah withdraw or cease fire is “surrender and equals victory for the enemy.” He further stated that the ceasefire conditions must include a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces and indicated the group would continue its attacks. Meanwhile, Israel has also announced it will continue its operations. President Trump said on the 4th that he believes Hezbollah has “not rejected the ceasefire agreement but is considering it.” He also stated that he has spoken with Hezbollah’s side and believes there is “progress” in the situation in Lebanon.
