Addis Ababa, May 21, 2026 Ethiopia is making tremendous progress in environmental protection, a positive step to address many of the impacts of climate change, according to Stefan Lines, Director of Scientific Affairs at the UK Met Office.
In an exclusive interview, the Director of Scientific Affairs said: “It’s really great to see Ethiopia making tremendous progress in environmental protection, which is closely linked to the climate we are experiencing now.”
He noted that climate change is a global issue, as all countries in the world will be affected by it in one way or another.
Lines emphasized the importance of all stakeholders starting to take steps to adapt to these increasing extreme weather events, which we are witnessing daily and will continue to see in the future.
In this regard, the Director of Scientific Affairs praised Ethiopia for taking positive action to address many of the impacts of climate change that the world is experiencing daily.
Ethiopia, through the “Green Legacy” initiative, has planted more than 48 billion trees since 2019.
This initiative, launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, aims to enhance ecosystem rehabilitation, support food security, and improve biodiversity.
Lines views climate-smart agriculture as critically important, given agriculture’s high sensitivity to weather and climate conditions.
Therefore, he stressed the need to integrate large amounts of data to make informed decisions about planting dates, crop types, and harvesting.
The Scientific Director explained that despite harsh climate conditions, there are still positive actions that can be taken in agriculture to help people adapt to these conditions.
The Scientific Director said that working closely together is crucial to using the best available data to produce the most accurate forecast, adding that it is also essential to communicate this information to people so they can use it to make better decisions.
