BROOKE’S POINT, Palawan – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Brooke’s Point District Jail has officially launched the “Galaw-Kultura: Traditional Dance Training in Jail” initiative.
The program aims to foster a deeper appreciation of Filipino cultural heritage among persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) by engaging them in traditional Philippine dance. It supports their rehabilitation and eventual reintegration into society.
Through this initiative, PDLs underwent hands-on instruction in indigenous dance, promoting holistic development in physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual dimensions.
The program was implemented with the support of BJMP personnel, reflecting the bureau’s ongoing effort to provide comprehensive development opportunities for individuals in custody.
A participant noted that the training offered more than mere movement—it reignited cultural identity, restored dignity, and imparted a renewed sense of purpose. “Each step brought hope and strength that transcended our circumstances,” the individual said.
“Through Galaw-Kultura, we aim to awaken a sense of identity and pride in our Filipino heritage—even within the confines of jail—so that PDLs can experience healing and meaning through our shared cultural expression,” a BJMP representative stated.
