BCCI has banned the use of smart glasses for players and match officials before the last two matches of IPL. This decision is part of anti-corruption measures.
Only two matches remain in IPL-2026 before it ends. Before this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new rule in the league. BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit has prohibited players and match officials from wearing smart glasses.
The reasoning provided is that such glasses can use mobile data and Wi-Fi for live streaming and video calls. An advisory issued to franchises states that some companies are selling smart sunglasses to players and support staff and marketing them.
Instructions to surrender
In the advisory, the Indian board wrote, “Please note that such devices have features like live streaming, sending and receiving text messages, and making audio and video calls using mobile data and Wi-Fi. Therefore, according to PMOA standards, such glasses are identified as audio-video recording devices. Hence, it is important to state that possession of such smart glasses by players and match officials is prohibited.”
BCCI has told players and officials to surrender such glasses before entering the PMOA area, or action will be taken against them. The statement says, “All players and support staff are instructed to surrender such glasses along with their mobile phones and smartwatches to the security officer before entering the PMOA on match day.”
Several cases of violations
This season in IPL, several instances of rule violations have come to light. Rajasthan Royals’ Romi Bhinder was fined for using a mobile phone in the dugout. The board has also banned guests from entering players’ and support staff’s rooms.
