A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck near the Cayman Islands on Saturday evening, triggering a tsunami warning for several islands in the Caribbean, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred at 6:23 p.m. ET at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), about 125 miles southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands, the USGS reported.
Tsunami waves reaching 1 to 3 meters above tide level are possible along some coasts of Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Honduras, Mexico, and Jamaica, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center.
The tsunami warning is in effect for the Cayman Islands and the Cuban provinces of Pinar del Río, Artemisa, and the Isle of Youth, the warning center stated.
Tsunami waves of less than 0.3 meters above tide level are possible for Belize, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary,” the Cayman Islands government said in a statement posted on X.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
