Doctors warned residents of Kuban against buying early nitrate-rich watermelons

A resident of Krasnodar was poisoned by an off-season watermelon, which contained almost three times the normal nitrate level.

Ludmila Kalinina spoke about the unpleasant consequences after consuming the imported fruit.

“I really wanted a watermelon. I bought it earlier than when the Kuban ones ripen. I cut it, ate very little, and I felt sick. I started feeling nauseous and my stomach was upset,” the woman complained.

Testing with a nitrate tester showed their content in the watermelon — 177 mg per 1 kg with an allowable norm of 60 mg. A nutritionist warned about the danger of nitrate accumulation in the body.

“They get into the blood. And if a person often eats such early watermelons, nitrates can accumulate and cause methemoglobinemia, that is, disrupt the transport of oxygen in the blood,” the
