UP Urban Schools Hiring Plan: The Uttar Pradesh government is taking another significant step towards major reforms in the education sector. To address the long-standing shortage of teachers in council primary schools in urban areas, a requisition for the recruitment of 11,508 assistant teachers has been sent. Additionally, the process for appointing approximately 10,000 instructors in upper primary schools has been accelerated. In total, new recruitments are expected for around 21,500 positions.

On May 17, during a ceremony honoring instructors, it was announced that as student numbers increase, further recruitments will be made to maintain the teacher-student ratio. This news is a great relief for young people preparing for government jobs.

Why This Recruitment?

In the urban areas (cities and towns) of Uttar Pradesh, the shortage of teachers in Basic Education Council schools has been a major problem for years. Limited recruitments occurred between 2011-16, but direct recruitment was almost halted afterward. Vacant positions were attempted to be filled through transfers from rural areas.

Large recruitments of 68,500 and 69,000 assistant teachers were announced in 2018, but these were mainly for rural areas. Many rural schools later became part of urban limits, further increasing pressure on city schools. Now, the Basic Education Council has collected details of vacant posts from all 75 districts and sent a requisition for 11,508 positions to the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission, Prayagraj. This recruitment is specifically for primary schools in urban areas, where student numbers are high and maintaining quality has been challenging.

Major Announcement: Over 20,000 Positions

On May 17, while honoring instructors and distributing increased honorarium checks (raised from 9,000 to 17,000 rupees), it was clarified:

  • Recruitment of 11,508 assistant teachers in urban areas.
  • Recruitment of 10,000 instructors in upper primary schools.
  • The process for a total of over 20,000 positions will proceed soon.

It was emphasized that sufficient teachers are essential for improving education quality. If student numbers increase in schools, additional appointments will be made to maintain the ratio.

    Prayagraj

Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is a historic city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, revered as a major Hindu pilgrimage site. It is famously the location of the Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, where the Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years. The city was renamed Prayagraj in 2018, reflecting its ancient name, and has served as a significant cultural and political center through various empires, including the Mughal and British periods.
