Gosaba

Gosaba is a remote island village in the Sundarbans delta of West Bengal, India, known for its role as a gateway to the Sundarbans mangrove forest. Its modern history began in the early 20th century when Sir Daniel Mackinnon Hamilton, a Scottish philanthropist, purchased the land and established a cooperative settlement to provide refuge for impoverished farmers and refugees. Today, Gosaba remains a vital hub for eco-tourism and serves as a living example of community-led development in a challenging riverine environment.

Sundarban

The Sundarbans is a vast mangrove forest located in the delta region of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers, straddling the border between India and Bangladesh. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is renowned for its unique ecosystem and as the habitat of the endangered Bengal tiger. Historically, the area has been shaped by tidal waterways and mudflats, and it has been protected as a forest reserve since the late 19th century to preserve its rich biodiversity.
