A sudden gunshot during a conversation at a store in the US state of Louisiana changed the life of a 30-year-old woman. The woman, originally from Gujarat, is now fighting between life and death, as a bullet tore through her jaw and exited.
Her husband has been arrested in connection with the incident. Doctors say she will need multiple surgeries to recover, and crowdfunding efforts are underway to help with her treatment. The victim, Jigisha alias Sonia Gajera, suffered severe facial injuries when she was shot on April 4 inside the Mezzo Grocery and Deli in Bossier City.
Woman Shot, Husband Arrested
According to police, the weapon was in the possession of her husband, Sharad Gajera, when the incident occurred. The bullet was fired at very close range, entering through her mouth and exiting through her jaw. Sharad was arrested on April 21 on charges of illegal use of a weapon. He surrendered to authorities after a warrant was issued.
Accidental Shooting, Says Police
Investigators said the incident happened when the couple was discussing the purchase of the store with the owner, Vince Mezzo. Although police have described the shooting as accidental, the circumstances have raised several serious questions.
Witnesses told local media that the couple was talking to the store owner when a sudden gunshot was heard. Several witnesses also questioned the claim that the shooting was accidental.
Woman in Critical Condition
Sonia remains in critical condition at a hospital in Bossier City. Doctors say her injuries are so severe that her life will be permanently altered. Due to the gunshot, she is now unable to eat normally. Her teeth, jaw, and lower lip have sustained extensive damage.
